If you picture an average day in the office, you’ll no doubt understand how stress can occur. Days are busy, there are deadlines to meet, office politics to deal with, and work seems to snowball rather than be done on time. Our prioritised to do list never seems to be completed and we feel like we’re failing rather than succeeding whilst sat at our modular office furniture. It’s no wonder that so many people suffer from stress when you paint a picture such as this.
Stress at work can easily exacerbate another mental health problem you already have, and that in itself can mean that the original problem spirals out of control. For instance, a person who has suffered from anxiety in the past may find that when they become stressed, their anxiety flares up to a higher degree than before. The whole problem merges into one and it can be hard to see each condition as separate. Everything literally becomes a nightmare.Stress is normally a reaction to an event or a problem but it can be as a result of feeling overwhelmed in terms of workload. Someone with a low level of self-esteem may also find themselves experiencing stress far easier, because they feel like they’re not doing as well as they should be; the pressure they put on themselves unwittingly causes the stress to occur and as a result they will shrink into themselves, certainly not coming up with ideas around the oval boardroom table as they normally would. As a result, a vicious cycle begins. Of course, a little stress can be a good thing, i.e. in very small amounts. When we feel a slight amount of stress, it works as a motivator and causes us to push to do something. In this case, we’re far more productive and on target than we would be otherwise. When that stress becomes too much, or it goes on for too long, our bodies are flooded with stress hormones, such as cortisol, and these start to effectively attack the body’s defence systems. For instance, your immune system, the one plus point you have in your armoury against disease and illness, starts to be weakened and you’ll notice physical symptoms coming your way. This can all be caused by stress which has gone on for too long, with the body’s stress response spiralling out of control and not really knowing when to turn itself off. You might think that we’re simply focusing on stress, but this is certainly one of the biggest problems in today’s modern workplace. Of course, depression is also a very real issue too. If someone feels like they’re not doing well at work, i.e. they’re always being criticised by their manager, they don’t feel supported by their colleagues, and they can’t focus because of the snowball of negativity that’s building up around them, they’re very susceptible to developing low mood. In that case, it can easily spiral down to depression, which can cause extremely severe and upsetting symptoms.Depression can be mild, moderate, or severe, and it can go on for a long period of time, or simply last as a flare up. A person who has suffered from depression in the past is quite likely to suffer with it again if they struggle with a similar situation and they don’t seek help to understand the condition and develop self-help tactics to banish it in the future. The stigma attached to mental health in the workplace can be enough to stop someone reaching out for that help, and therefore they’re stuck in a seemingly never-ending cycle of negativity.Let’s be honest, we spend so much time at work, it’s quite likely that the reason for a mental health issue would be linked to this part of our lives. Even when something is going on in your private life, your work can suffer, and as a result you might start to make mistakes and miss deadlines. That in turn leads towards workplace stress, which exacerbates the whole issue over again. And make sure you use the Office Chair Singapore of Ardent Office Furniture (AOF) Singapore.
